From deciding permissible content to helping your child have a better relationship with technology, here are three answers to the question, “What are tips for raising a screen-smart kid?”
- Set Limits
- Give Guidance
- Maintain Healthy Screen Habits
Set Limits
One important tip for raising a screen-smart kid is to set limits. We must set clear rules and boundaries about the use of screens and devices, like spending a limited time on them and what type of content is permissible.
Having consistent expectations helps children develop an understanding of when it’s appropriate to use technology, while also avoiding overuse or misuse of it.
Setting a good example by monitoring your own screen time is an effective way to help kids develop healthy habits around technology use.
Give Guidance
Raising a screen-smart kid requires guidance and forethought on the parents’ part. A tip to consider is introducing tech early, but with responsible limits. For instance, teaching basic coding principles like if-else statement logic lays the groundwork for understanding how games and websites work.
This allows people to gain exposure to technology a few steps removed from direct engagement. It provides an opportunity for thoughtful dialogue about our relationship with tech without needing to police behavior directly or limit access altogether.
Maintain Healthy Screen Habits
It’s important to be a role model and maintain healthy screen habits and for your child to become tech-savvy in today’s landscape. Setting boundaries and creating a digital limit can help your child have a healthier relationship with technology and the real world, which will set them up for success as they grow.
