The Joy of Small Things by Hannah Jane Parkinson
Road trips are both beautiful and challenging. When I felt fatigued, I turned to this book, knowing it would uplift me. Its small stories transformed my view of the world. Its format was also practical for traveling, as the brief tales could be enjoyed at any time without losing the flow.

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
A fun book to read on a road trip is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. This novel is a great read due to the main setting being in nature. The plot also draws in the attention of readers quickly with its thrilling twists and turns on how a boy tries to survive in the wild, making the book the perfect page-turner for a road trip.

The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon
The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon, which has recently been turned into a TV series, is my favorite fiction series to read when on the road. The first seven books, which are big, are largely absent from the TV series. You learn about the period due to Gabaldon’s superb character and narrative development, local descriptions, and a plethora of side characters, some of whom have appeared in multiple books.
The first book, titled Outlander, is available in hard copy or on Audible; the narrator of the audio version significantly enhances the tale. It combines education, romance, and action. I started the series a few years ago and told everyone to watch it. I dread the finish and anticipate each new book, which is about 4-5 years apart. I’m not interested in it.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is about a herder boy named Santiago who leaves the priesthood in search of the alchemist (his purpose in life) and travels through Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. I loved the coincidence of traveling in the book while I was on a road trip, but aside from that, I was also inspired by this young man’s life and his dedication to finding meaning in life. Reflecting on my own life, I picked up valuable lessons on how determination can lead me to my wildest dreams.

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
My favorite book that I read while on a road trip was the classic tale of adventure, Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. This novel is an amazing example of how far the human spirit can go when confronted with great challenges and adversity. It encapsulates themes of perseverance and determination, showing us how even in the most desperate situations we can find a way to triumph over our obstacles. The vivid descriptions of the island, castaways, and wildlife make it easy to get lost in this timeless tale of exploration and risk-taking. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for an immersive reading experience during their next road trip.
