6 Best Books For Road Trips

What’s a good children’s book you’d recommend for a road trip?

To help you find good children’s books for your next family road trip, we asked business leaders and book lovers this question for their best recommendations. There are several great books to choose from for your next road trip, from the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” to “The Cat in the Hat.”

Here are six good books recommended for a road trip:

  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid
  • Harry Potter Series
  • Fantasy Novel
  • The Cat in the Hat
  • Hiking Day
  • I Spy Series

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Putting together the bag of books and puzzles is the highlight of proper road trip packing. It might sound cheesy, but my girls love reading “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” It is light and funny and keeps them entertained for hours. The journey starts with organizing the space to incorporate your book, snacks, drink, and blanket, all within arms reach, for kids. So many cherished memories were created from the back seat of the car.

Harry Potter Series

When it comes to road trips, the longer the book, the better! My kids love fiction and fantasy, and Harry Potter books keep them thoroughly entertained throughout the journey. Not to mention, they love the series so much that they will most likely reread it once they get to the end. When in doubt, the classics never fail.

Fantasy Novel

Depending on the age of your child, I would recommend a variety of fantasy novels! Lots of parents think that after a certain age, children should start reading more nonfiction books, but the truth is that you are never too old to entice your imagination. Books of this genre can keep your child’s love of reading alive and plenty entertained during a road trip.

The Cat in the Hat

Sitting in the backseat of a car can be tedious and dull. You want to keep your kids occupied on that long road trip, but it’s tough when they’ve heard every story you know already! I recommend “The Cat in the Hat” and “Sideways Stories from Wayside School.” They’re full of adventure with an element of humor for all different ages.

Hiking Day

For me, it’s “Hiking Day” by Anne Rockwell. First, I love their illustrations. Cute and not cheesy. Second, it talks about spending time in nature and hiking, so it primes your kids for the traveling ahead. The writing is easy to understand, and I’m sure your kids will love it a lot.

I Spy Series

The I Spy series is a good book for traveling. The books teach children to look deeply and notice small details, observation skills that come in handy when traveling. The activities command kids’ attention and keep the little ones’ minds off the length of the trip. You can transition from playing on the page to playing out the window or at your destination. Or, if the surrounding scenery is not conducive to real-life gameplay, you can extend the game by asking kids to find pictured objects not listed in the prompts. There are many volumes in the series, and you can take a new book on every trip. The comfort of this routine adds a sense of familiarity for kids amidst unfamiliar settings.
