This story follows Quentin Coldwater as he discovers a hidden world of sorcery and becomes enrolled in an elite academy – a world both familiar and new at the same time. This series is a slight step up in terms of age appropriateness from the Harry Potter series but young adult readers will love being immersed in a fantastical adventure filled with fun science-fiction, humor, political maneuvering, and even romance.

The Redwall Series by Brian Jacques
The Redwall series by Brian Jacques was an incredibly influential series in my childhood. Jacques got his start writing and reading stories to blind children, and his prose speaks to that experience as his descriptions are so precise and imaginative they paint a picture. The Redwall series focuses on families of mice, otters, rabbits, squirrels, badgers and shrews trying to protect their castles from the wild foxes, weasels, and rats who would prefer to ruin their heritage rather than build. While it’s lighter on magic than the Harry Potter series, the vivid and mellifluous prose and medieval settings in castles and abbeys and schools provide great similarities, as do the themes of underdogs rising heroically to challenges that could save their world.
