As a parent of three and a self-employed individual, I have a ton of screen time. So for my kids, it’s a “do as I say, not as I do” thing a lot of times. My wife is the expert in this, but for me, I have one great tactic.
Because I spend so much time on a screen, I get my off-screen time by letting my kids know Dad needs a break and wants to do something with them. Then I make sure that “something” is a meaningful learning activity.
I love going to the state park and doing a nature walk, or picking a home project that I can claim I need helpers for. It creates a great experience between me and them and gives me a chance to help them learn something new, even if it is just some basic use of tools or what birds and plants are native to our area.
